Past Activities: February/March

The past month was once again filled to the brim with fun activities of all kinds!

SMOTMD February - Karaoke Drink

From Rasputin to Breaking Free from High School Musical (Disney movie); a lot of songs were sung at the Karaoke Drink on February 13th. A really good performance from all of you! It was nice to see many of you singing together, enjoying some drinks and having a good time. Hope we can see each other again in any other activity of H.V. Ockham! And if you feel in the mood of organising a drink such as the Karaoke Drink… you can always share your ideas with DriCiie! New topics and ideas are always welcome.

PS: Hope you enjoyed PubliCie singing the song “Unwritten” (ironic if you ask me, haha).

Freshmen activity: Bowling

On February 16th, the ACCIE organised a bowling activity for the new bachelor honours students! While occupying quite a few lanes at the Kennispark bowling alley, everyone tried their best to throw strike after strike - though for some of us, the primary target was more to keep the ball out of the gutter for once… Despite some embarrassments, we had good fun! Afterwards, some of us went to the Ockham Room for some snacks and board games (which we are definitely better at than bowling).

Board game evening

While members of Ockham often organise impromptu board game nights, this time we had actually planned one on February 23rd! According to what has become almost a tradition by now, many members decided to drop by for some nice games, snacks and drinks. We played a variety of games, including Secret Hitler (during which nobody is to be trusted and the filthiest mind games are played) and Jungle Speed (which really is more a test of your reflexes rather than an actual board game). If you ever feel like playing a board game in the Ockham Room, feel free to drop a message in the General Chat and you’ll most definitely find some other members willing to join you!

Lunch Lecture: Joost Kok

On Friday the 24th of February, the dean of the Honours Programme as well as the EEMCS faculty, prof. dr. Joost Kok, was invited to host a lecture about his research expertises. His presentation explored the power of data, focusing on the theory of Minimal Description Length, collecting data through Citizen Science, combining different data using ontologies and encryption, and practical applications in sports and biodiversity. It was interesting to get a better understanding of how data can be harnessed to unlock new insights in a wide range of fields!

For the upcoming months, we have some additional interesting lunch lectures planned for you. Want to join? Stay tuned!

Plenary session (and drink)

On March the 8th, it was time for the quarterly plenary session of the bachelor honours cohorts! This plenary session marked the first time all honours students of the new cohort gathered to share information about their honours tracks with their peers. After a pizza dinner, the students were informed about the assignment of the session: in groups, the students were tasked to create a short video to demonstrate what their honours track is all about. Every group unleashed their creativity upon the assignment to create some of the most hilarious videos! As per usual, Ockham organised a drink in the Technobar after the plenary session. It was nice to see so many of you there!
