Film Review: TÁR
Unlike other films, Tár starts with a very long opening credits scene which leaves the audience wondering when it is really going to start. Don’t be too confused at the fact that Monster Hunter (a video game franchise) was credited in there, as it will all make sense in the end.
Throughout the film we see Lydia Tár, a fictional renowned middle aged female conductor live her life as both a famous figure in classical music and a mother. The amount of classical music jargon thrown around in the first half an hour definitely sets the scene for a prestigious and expensive lifestyle traveling between New York and the music capital Berlin. The cinematography is top notch which makes uninteresting dialogue so much more intriguing as it films shots from an angle as if we are almost stalking Tár which is a great way to foreshadow upcoming events.
As with fame comes attention as well as unwanted attention and this film definitely showcased the difficulty to upkeep an image as well as abuse of power and cancel culture. There are some scenes that will still keep you wondering for hours what actually happened which I personally find great as a philosophy honors student.
Overall it is a long sitting but intriguing enough to make time fly away even for someone who doesn’t know anything about classical music. The small and intimate theaters of concordia in the city center also adds to the wonderful experience. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.
